A 73-year-old author has expressed his opinion via Twitter on the ongoing controversy in the university. The controversy began when Aligarh MP Satish Gautam objected to the photograph of the founder of Pakistan on the walls of the student union office of AMU.

Mumbai: Famous songwriter and screenwriter Javed Akhtar said that it is a matter of embarrassment to be seen in the picture of Mohammad Ali Jinnah at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). He said that but those who are protesting against it should also oppose the temples which have been made in honor of Godse.

A 73-year-old author has expressed his opinion via Twitter on the ongoing controversy in the university. The controversy began when Aligarh MP Satish Gautam objected to the photograph of the founder of Pakistan on the walls of the student union office of AMU.

Akhtar wrote, "Jinnah was neither a student nor a teacher in Aligarh. It is a shame that their picture is there. Administration and students should voluntarily remove that picture. Those who are protesting against that picture should now also perform against those temples which were made in honor of Godse. "

AMU spokesman Shafe Kidwai defended the picture saying that the picture has been there for decades. Kidwai said that Jinnah was the founding member of the university and he was given lifetime membership of the student union. Traditionally, photographs of all lifetime members are placed on the walls of the Student Union office.

There was violence in the campus yesterday after the dispute. To disperse the students of AMU, the police had left tear gas shells. At least six people were injured in this.
